You may have seen articles written about the use of Formaldehyde in Keratin straightening products and have concerns about its affects. While we are not qualified to tell you that Formaldehyde in straightening products is safe or not, we provide the list below to give you a number of things to consider as you make your own evaluation: Offending Products - The products that have caused the most concerns are those containing high levels of Formaldehyde (6%-8%). Reportedly, the FDA removed a product named Brazilian Blowout from the market because it was so strong (8.2% Formaldehyde). Also, many salons used unapproved, bootleg products from Brazil that are high in Formaldehyde or spiked up the amount of Formaldehyde in their products. We do not and will not use these products. New Products - New, legitimate straightening products are very low in Formaldehyde, and all manufacturers have either come out with Formaldehyde free products or are working on them. We only use Formaldehyde low or free products. Please see our Products Page. Journalistic Exuberance - Most reporters sit around looking for stories to write that they think will be interesting to readers. As soon as reporters saw the FDA remove Brazilian Blowout from the market, they swooped in to “write the story”. Since then, more reporters piled on, thinking there was still a story there. Many Sources of Formaldehyde - Most people do not understand how many of the products they use contain Formaldehyde. Shampoos, makeup, toiletries, cleaning products, adhesives, clothes, and cigarettes, are just a few examples of Formaldehyde presence in our society. Ventilation - Most salons have done nothing to modify their ventilation systems to handle odors or fumes in the salon. At Kick Back, we have installed high capacity exhaust fans above our stations to remove any fumes that could be created.
